Letter from Chairperson

Dear Incoming Student,

My name is John Moore and, as student government vice president and orientation chairperson, I would like to congratulate you on making the decision to attend St. Joseph’s College. Welcome to the SJC community! With orientation rapidly approaching, I can’t help but think of my own orientation just three short years ago. Making the transition from high school to college may seem difficult, but as long as you keep an open mind and a smile on your face I can assure you that you will make the transition flawlessly.

You have “played your cards right” and “hit the jackpot” by choosing to attend St. Joseph’s College, so let’s keep the lucky streak going. On Thursday, August 29, we will have our first day of orientation which focuses on student life, followed by an academic orientation on Tuesday, September 3. Both orientations are sure to be filled with fun and excitement, and they will give you the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with your fellow incoming students as well as a select group of upperclassmen who have volunteered to be your orientation leaders. Our orientation program is guaranteed to be informative and enriching and it will provide you with the tools to make many lasting college memories.

Orientation of new students isn’t limited to two days — it continues throughout the semester! The Freshman Year Experience will meet once a week during Common Hour on Mondays to acclimate you to all of the resources and opportunities on campus. In addition, many events and activities have been planned by Student Government and the Campus Activities Board to ensure that you are introduced to all aspects of college life. Here are some of the September highlights:

  • Wednesday, September 4: Back-to-School BBQ
  • Thursday, September 5: Club Fair on the Mall
  • Monday, September 9: Investiture of New Students
  • Tuesday, September 10 and Wed., Sept. 11: Club Spotlight
  • Thursday, September 12: Karaoke Party
  • Tuesday, September 17: Comedy Hour
  • Friday, September 20: Trip to Broadway Show “Pippin”
  • Wednesday, September 25: Campus Activities Board Disco Party
  • Thursday, September 26: Trip to Mets Game vs. Brewers
  • Friday and Saturday September 27-28: New Student Overnight Retreat (optional)

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns during the summer please contact the Office of Student Life at 718.940.5752 or 718.940.5754. I encourage you to join our Facebook page: St. Joseph’s College (NY) Brooklyn Student Life or go to the website: www.sjcny.edu/orientation2013 to meet the other members of the orientation team.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer. I look forward to meeting you on August 29!

Sincerely,

John Moore ’14
